Once you go dual, you never go back?

I need some input. Someone to play devil's advocate. Not that any of you are near the level of the Prince of Darkness, but I dunno, maybe some of you are??

Situation:

I am currently sporting dual 20" Apple Cinema Displays. I'm thinking of ditching the duals, and going one 23" Cinema Display. This sets me up for a future MacBookPro purchase, as well as keeps me happy now with my current G5 tower.

Your job:

Leave me feedback in the comments with your opinion. Can I go from duallys, back to the world of solo monitors? Is one 23" better than 2 x 20"? Or am I better off sticking with dual? Spaces in the new Leopard is like having 16 displays...

Oh, one other thing; for some reason Apple emailed me a link to an Employee Purchase Program which is 15% off everything they sell. I dunno why they sent it to me, I haven't worked there in over two years... but hey, it's not like I'm gonna turn it down.

Edit: Factor in the possibility of a 30" as well. Would you trade dual 20's for a single 30" ?

Reed says,

I've got a single 23" and it's fun :) But I've never had anything more than 23".

I dunno how fun Spaces will be, because you can't see everything at once. But what do I know. You could get a new PowerMac?

Noah says,

Reed - I do love seeing everything all the time... but even with dual monitors, I end up with windows overlapping other windows...

Robb says,

I think you're crazy to consider going from dual 20" to a single 23", a 30 perhaps, but you'll be sorely missing the real estate IMO.

Jonathan says,

If you are getting rid of the 20inchers, does that mean you are going to sell them? If so, how much do you want for one? Holla!

Noah says,

Robb - I tend to agree with you... but then when Spaces comes out, I'll have plenty of real estate...

Jonathan - To any MF reader, I'll sell em for $550, that is, if I decide to sell. You get dibs on one if you'd like.

danh says,

why mess around with anything less than a 30? 30 gets *all* the ladies...

Posted @ September 1, 2006

Noah says,

danh - you do have a point... all the ladies love the 30's.

Caleb HAGEN says,

Nope. This isn't a good though. Keep the 20's. Spaces shmaces.

Caleb HAGEN says,

umm. i meant, "This isn't a good thought." so sorry.

niko says,

i say you give your rig and the dual 20's to your neighbor down the street around the corner. then just go through life using the old titanium powerbook you have. so what if the wireless capabilities are more crippled than the fish out of water. matter o' fact.. i'll trade you a powerbook 520c for the rig and 2 20's.. it has an unbelievable 8" scrn running at 640x480!!

Posted @ September 1, 2006

Noah says,

Caleb - Why?

niko - do you think the 520c will support a 30"?

Posted @ September 1, 2006

niko says,

the 520c will support a 30".. a 30" powerblock! or a 30" magnafying glass to see its screen. it's a sure winner. but my offer only stands till tomorrow.

Austen says,

ehh man. my suggestion is drop the 20's and get one 30. you gain HD, you dont gain any space, but you cant run duals off a macbook, which i highly suggest getting, unless you can afford both.

macbook with a 30 is the best combo money can buy. and you are smart for thinking ahead.

sancho says,

wait...I'm so confused. You are rolling with only two 20's, what do you have on the other tires? And they make 30's now. I'm pimping some 22s, but 30s, hell ya. I think 30s would be a real shock to the system, maybe something you wouldn't recover from for a while...

Joshua Blankenship says,

First off, I think the Dell 2407WFP 24" beats the Apple displays by a long shot. It's brighter, has more ports/places to plug in thingies, and costs $200 less. You could buy TWO of the Dells and still have $600 to spare (for extending your subscription to Deatails Magazine) instead of getting that monstrous 30" display, which is a waste of $2k and so big you almost get lost using it.

That being said, I went from dual 17" to a 23" and never looked back. I like having one monitor *much* better, and I use Expose/Quicksilver so much I hardly notice any lacking screen real estate. With Spaces added to the mix, no problem.
