Goodbye, Goodnight Cable.

I am downgrading. Saying good bye to all the premium channels that cable has to offer, and going with what is known as Limited Basic Cable. It's nothing more than a few local channels, and the players, FOX, NBC, ABC and CBS.

Yes, my 42" plasma is now limited to say, 11 channels. Have I lost my futon mind? Have Commies invaded my neighborhood and brainwashed me into believing that Communism is the way? Does that last sentence have anything to do with me trimming down my cable package? Was the mother of Michael Jackson's accuser later convicted of welfare fraud?

Let's just say this; now that I have seen the HD light, I don't WANT to watch regular TV. So, Goodbye, Goodnight Cable.

Reed says,

But if you aren't getting cable, how are you getting HD? Does it come over the airwaves, like in old times?

hink says,

Digital broadcasting was easier to implement than digital cable–probably because the networks (being ostensibly in charge of signals from the lens to the screen) simply had the money required to convert the infrastructure before all the piddly cable channels did. Not to mention that removing last-mile obstacles to HD signal quality (old coax in tha 'hood, ya hear?) is a pain in the ass that broadcasting by its nature never had to contend with.

Top that off with a federal law requiring all broadcast TV signals to be digital by '07, and it makes sense that they went whole-hog with HD as soon as they had the chance. Ask Noah; HD is a selling point that Will and Grace certainly isn't. :)

Sharif says,

If you get a few days deeper into this experiment and find your withdrawal pains are too strong, try this.

For my cable company anyway, the limited basic package is determined solely by a setting in the cable box. Plug the cable straight into the TV, TiVo or what have you, and you'll still get the full extended package.

I've never had cable (even basic) in my life.

I like that.

Noah says,

Reed - The HD still comes through the analog coaxial line.

hink - I follow.

Sharif - Seriously, if it doesn't broadcast in HD, it's just not worth watching. It's like using a T3 line, then going back to dial up. The pain of seeing it non-HD is greater than any pain of missing it altogether.

ysbl - You should be living man...
