It's happening in Soledad.

soledad.jpg
I was down in San Luis Obispo (SLO) this weekend. My old roomate was getting married. It was a wedding to remember. One hour and 42 minutes into it, we finally go to the ring. Before that, it was more like a concert/bless-fest. Needless to say, it was a futon'y good time.

I live in the Bay Area and SLO is about 200 miles south of us. Just down the 101. Since I went to school at Cal Poly, I've driven the 101 more times than I'd like to admit. Driving down, you travel through several small towns along the Monterey coast. These towns are where a LOT of the produce that goes around the country comes from. One such town is Soledad. Soledad is a small farming town the 101 cuts right through the middle of. With a population of approximately 11,000 there doesn't seem to be much going on in Soledad, except maybe some watering, or picking or planting...

However, the folks of Soledad beg to differ. As you can see, there is a huge billboard as you enter the small town with the words, "It's happening in Soledad." Now am I the only one wondering just what the Futon IS happening in Soledad? Am I missing the "It". Just what is happening in Soledad?

Hopefully some Soledad folks will pipe up on the comments section!

All this and add the county fair and a rodeo...not to mention some great hole in the wall Mexican restaurants with great food!

What more are you lookin' for?

One time my car broke down in Soledad. It sucked! I was stuck there over night. There was this creepy homeless guy following me around this McDonnald's. Then I stayed at this Motel 6 or something. I never want to go back there again.

I've been doing the drive from the SF Bay Area to SLO for many years. I am a Poly grad, BUS ADMIN 1990 and my brother, AG BUS 1982, lives in Los Osos. I don't ever not remember the "It's Happening in Soledad" sign. When I made the drive last month, I noticed how clean and unfaded the sign looks, though it uses a color scheme from the 70's. Does anyone know how long the billboard has been there? Since 1970?

I have lived in Soledad, CA. since I was a young todler and I can say that nothing... and I mean nothing is happening in Soledad.
I'm 22 yrs old and I don't think anything has ever really happened in Soledad.

John Steinbeck, the famous author, mentioned Soledad in some of his books but that's about it I think.

We have a new shopping center... Blockbuster, Starbucks, Subway... that's about it, I think.

That sign is... I can't even find the words.

Almost forgot.
We do have a Mission.
It's out in the backroads somewhere.

I went there once, and I hear we're going to get a theatre, but that's about it.
